Libraries That Power Our Economy

Howard County is moving forward with a bold new Central Library at the Columbia Lakefront—a transformational project that will serve as both a civic anchor and economic engine for years to come.

As County Executive Calvin Ball and HCLS President & CEO Tonya Aikens announced renewed momentum for the project, we are proud to release our new video series: Libraries That Power Our Economy.

This three-part series highlights how the Howard County Library System (HCLS) supports innovation, workforce development and community prosperity across all six branches. A fourth bonus video, an extended conversation between HCEDA CEO Jennifer Jones and Tonya Aikens, is also available for those who want a deeper dive into leadership, impact and future planning.

One System, Six Unique Branches

HCLS is a unified system, but no two branches are alike. In One System, Six Unique Branches, you’ll see how each location contributes something specific to the business ecosystem:

  • Glenwood Branch houses a makerspace with 3D printers, laser engraving tools and a recording booth—perfect for early-stage entrepreneurs and creatives.
  • Elkridge Branch is home to the DIY Education Center, where residents can borrow tools, take hands-on workshops or explore creative services.
  • East Columbia Branch supports remote work with abundant computers and study rooms, while Savage Branch boasts a digital AV lab, musical instruments and production tools.
  • Miller Branch offers sustainability education through its Enchanted Garden and green rooftop overlook.
  • Central Branch connects the community with one of the region’s largest collections of fine art for lending.

Each location is designed around access, equity and real-world impact.

Resources That Foster Innovation

The second video in the series, Resources That Foster Innovation, highlights the Library’s unique collection of free digital tools that lower barriers, increase opportunity, and help entrepreneurs and small business owners sharpen their edge.

In her interview with HCLS CEO Tonya Aikens, HCEDA CEO Jennifer Jones shared, “Part of what makes this community so special is our library system. It’s a place where learning sparks new beginnings and ideas take off.”

Something New Every Single Day

The needs of entrepreneurs, jobseekers and families change rapidly. In Something New Every Single Day, the library shows how it evolves alongside its community—offering new programs, updated technology and opportunities that reflect Howard County’s dynamic economy. STEM workshops, language courses, digital literacy training and professional certifications are just a few of the offerings residents rely on to grow their skills.

How Libraries Drive Economic Growth in Howard County

In the final video, How Libraries Drive Economic Growth in Howard County – A CEO Conversation, Jennifer Jones and Tonya Aikens explore the deeper role libraries play in a thriving local economy. Their discussion covers access to resources, environmental design, public-private collaboration and how HCLS prepares Howard County’s residents for careers of the future.
